Roots Lessons & Discussion Questions

March 1 - Joseph & Mary
We learned about the special announcement of Jesus’ birth. The angel Gabriel told Mary she would have a baby named Jesus. He would be the Son of the Most High, holy, and a King who rules forever.
Jesus was born in a humble place, not a palace. Angels announced His birth to shepherds, sharing the good news with everyone.

  1. What does “holy” mean, and why is it important that Jesus is holy?
  2. Why is it surprising that Jesus was born in a simple place instead of a palace?
  3. How did Joseph show trust in God?
  4. How can we trust and obey God like Mary and Joseph did?

March 8 - Jesus growing up
After Jesus was born, King Herod tried to harm Him, but God warned Joseph, and they escaped to Egypt. When Jesus was 12, He was found in the temple after being separated from His parents. The lesson also reminds us that even though Satan is the enemy, Jesus will win in the end.

  • Why was King Herod afraid of baby Jesus?
  • How did God protect Jesus and His family?
  • Who is our enemy, and why don’t we have to be afraid?
  • How does it make you feel knowing that Jesus wins in the end?
March 15 - The Lamb of God
God sent John to prepare the people for the coming Savior. John told everyone to turn back to God because the Messiah was coming, and he baptized people to show they were repenting.
When John saw Jesus, he called Him the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Jesus is the only perfect sacrifice, and anyone who trusts in Him becomes part of God’s family.

  • Why did John call Jesus the “Lamb of God”?
  • Why was Jesus the perfect sacrifice and why couldn’t someone else like John pay for our sins?
  • John’s baptism was to show that people had turned back to God. How is that different than our baptism? What are we putting our faith in?
March 22 - Getting to know Jesus
We learned a lot about Jesus. He chose 12 disciples to follow him, was tempted by Satan in the wilderness, and show compassion by healing leprosy. Jesus show that he has all authority and the greatest power in heaven and on earth.

  • How did Jesus respond when Satan tempted Him?
  • What does compassion mean, and how did Jesus show it?
  • What does it tell us about Jesus that He has power over sickness and everything else?
March 29 - Born Again/ Healing by Jesus
Jesus told Nicodemus that no one can enter God’s kingdom unless they are born again, meaning born of the Spirit. Being good or important is not enough, people must believe in what Jesus did on the cross to have eternal life.
Later, Jesus forgave a paralyzed man’s sins before healing him, showing that He is truly God and has authority to forgive sins.

  • Can we be saved by being good or important?
  • What does it mean to be “born again”?
  • Why were the leaders upset when Jesus forgave the paralyzed man’s sins?

Monthly MEmory Verse
